Physical Education & Sport
The Physical Education curriculum is designed to promote an active and healthy lifestyle, foster physical literacy, and cultivate a positive attitude towards physical activity. Through a range of sports, fitness activities, and wellness education, students will engage in a well-rounded physical education experience. Our curriculum emphasises the development of fundamental movement skills, coordination, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Students will participate in a variety of sports and recreational activities, building competence and confidence in their abilities.
Beyond physical performance, our program also focuses on wellness education, including topics such as nutrition, stress management, and mental well-being. There will be opportunities for students to explore their interests, improve their physical fitness, and develop a lifelong appreciation for the importance of health and wellness

Key Stage 4 Curriculum (Core PE)
What is the course?
Physical Education is a core subject taken by all students. This is a non-examination course.
What will I be taught?
In all activities you will learn how to manage yourself in a variety of situations and how to plan, perform and evaluate performance. The principles of health-related exercise and the effects upon the body will be delivered as an integral part of all of the activities covered. You will complete an in-depth study into a variety of team and individual sports.
Which units will I study?
The department offers a varied programme and you are given the opportunity to select which activities you wish to follow. Activities offered include: football, rugby, netball, fitness, basketball, cricket, softball, rounders, handball and athletics.
Is there a practical element?
All activities are delivered through practical work.
What skills will I learn?
Within each activity you will be provided with the opportunity to extend your Key Stage 3 knowledge in terms of skill, tactics and performance. You will also be expected to undertake the roles of umpire, official and/or coach.
What would be expected of me?
You will be expected to bring full Lenham School P.E. kit to every lesson and participate fully. If students are unable to participate you should bring a note explaining the nature of the injury or illness. You must still bring your P.E. kit and will change at the discretion of the P.E. staff, as you may still be able to participate in some capacity. You must adhere to safety codes as specified by the individual activity.
Is there coursework in this subject?
There is no coursework in this subject.
How will I be assessed?
This is a non-examination course. Assessment in core Physical Education is a vital part of the learning process and will take place continuously throughout the course. Assessment is by verbal feedback, performance grading, written and oral testing and on-going student/teacher dialogue.

Key Stage 4 Curriculum (Sport)
Exam Board – Pearsons BTEC
What is the course?
The BTEC Tech Award in Sport is equivalent to 1 GCSE grade.
What will I be taught?
Learners will undertake practical sessions to develop skills in planning and delivering sports activity sessions to participants.
Which Units will I study?
Component 1: Preparing Participants to Take Part in Sport and Physical Activity
Component 2: Taking Part and Improving Other Participants Sporting Performance
Component 3: Developing Fitness to Improve Other Participants Performance in Sport and Physical Activity
Is there a practical element?
Sport is both a practical and theoretical course. Wherever possible the course content is delivered through a practical experience.
What skills will I learn?
The qualification enables learners to develop their sector-specific skills, such as sport analysis and sports leadership, using realistic vocational contexts, and personal skills, such as communication, planning, time management and teamwork through a practical and skills-based approach to learning and assessment.
What would be expected of me?
There is an expectation that you will participate in all practical sessions to enable you to access the course fully, wearing full Lenham PE kit. It is important that you are willing to take on independent study to enhance the classroom learning experience. It is also essential that you can organise yourself and submit coursework on time. You are required to attend at least one extra-curricular sports activity per week.
Is there coursework involved in this course?
Components one and two are coursework assignments internally assessed. Component three is an exam-based assessment.
How will I be assessed?
The final grade awarded for a qualification represents an aggregation of a learner’s performance across the three components. A higher performance in some components may be balanced by a lower outcome in others.
What courses or employment can I progress to at the end of the course?
This course will provide a sound foundation for employment in the sports industry. This course is also essential for anyone wishing to progress to a Level 3 Sport Course in the Sixth Form. This course provides a great foundation for careers like teaching, coaching, physiotherapy, personal trainer, nutritionist, gym managers to name but a few.

Key Stage 5 Curriculum
Sport Course Summary - Pearsons BTEC
The BTEC in Sport is a two-year course which provides a comprehensive introduction to the study of Sport. You will develop an understanding of the sports industry by exploring the different skills required for different career pathways into the industry. Additionally, you will study Fitness Training as well as the Anatomy and Physiology of the body. The course is designed for post-16 students who aim to progress to higher education and ultimately to employment, possibly in the Sports Industries, as part of a programme of study alongside other BTECs or A levels. The BTEC is both examination and coursework based with four units designed to cover a wide range of academic and vocational skills. You will research fitness training and programming for health, sport and wellbeing and will analyse the results to support improvements in a client’s health and wellbeing. You will learn the functions of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems and explore the effects of exercise on these systems.

How the course is delivered
The course is unit based and each unit is given a credit value depending on the guided learning hours. At the start of each unit, you will receive an assignment brief detailing the tasks and criteria to be met.
Entry Requirements
Minimum of five GCSEs at Grade 4 or above, including English Literature or Language and Maths. Subject specific results will also be considered when choosing this course.
Teaching Hours:
8 hours per fortnight for Extended Certificate
16 hours per fortnight for Diploma
Enrichment and Extra-Curricular
To extend learning beyond the classroom, you should consider doing some of the following tasks:
- Join a local sports team will provide you with regular practice, competition and skill development.
- Participating in fitness classes such as yoga, Pilates, aerobics or martial arts will help your overall fitness, flexibility and strength.
- Engage with outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, kayaking or rock climbing offers physical challenges and connects you with nature.
- Use fitness apps or follow online workout programmes will allow for a flexible guided exercise routine.
- Gain certifications in first aid and CPR will enhance your safety awareness and provide you with valuable skills for managing injuries.
